Dry Stone Sunken Garden

It’s not every project that gets its own sacred ritual spot, but in this case the stars really did align.

    Story

Like many homes in the area, this property featured a steep slope and a lot of rocks. As we completed a larger renovation, one goal for the landscaping was to create some flat land around the 1st floor of the house. It became clear that an expanded retaining wall would be necessary, and that’s when we turned to noted dry stone artist Dan Snow.

Working with the steep slope, Dan designed and built a “sunken garden” inspired by favorite examples from the client. In addition to the coordination of significant excavation and earth moving, Apple Tree Builders built an oak-clad deck that overlooks the sunken garden.
